How to Improve Your Mood with Food

For the most part, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and should be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is very true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. There are a number of foods that, when you eat them, may improve your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually terrific at fighting back depression. You must be sure, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. When you wish to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to boost your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Eat an egg and be happy!

Make a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all great for improving your mood. This is possible since these foods have a bunch of magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The higher your serotonin levels, the better you will feel. Nuts, in addition to improving your mood, can be a superb protein source.

Cold water fish are great if you are wanting to feel better. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight depression.

It’s not hard to overcome your bad mood when you are eating grains. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are excellent at helping you feel better. These grains fill you up better and that can help improve your moods too. It’s easy to feel a little bit off when you feel hungry! These grains can improve your mood because it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. You digest them quicker than other foods which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea has been found to be packed full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has discovered that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You probably already knew it is not hard to get healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood also!

See, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try some of these suggestions instead.
