Foods That Make Your Mood Better

Mostly, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and must be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that actually can raise your moods when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, you may be surprised to discover, are fantastic at battling depression. Just be sure that you don’t get rid of the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, especially the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. B vitamins can be terrific for elevating your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–function better. Consume an egg and feel a lot happier!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all wonderful for improving your mood. This is because these foods are rich in magnesium, which helps to raise your production of serotonin. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given time. The more serotonin in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a great protein food source.

Cold water fish are great if you wish to feel happier. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly boost your mood.

It’s not hard to overcome your bad mood when you consume grains. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are terrific at helping you be happier. These grains fill you up better and that can help improve your moods also. Feeling famished can really bring you down! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not hard to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Green tea is actually great for your mood. You just knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is found to be rich in an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies prove that this particular amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You knew green tea could help you be better. Now you know that applies to your mood too!

So you see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are bad for you to feel better! Test out these hints instead!
