Foods That Make You Happy

Most of us believe that comfort foods are not good for us and that we need to avoid them. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this is very true. Other times, comfort foods can be perfectly nutritious and good for us to eat. There are several foods that really can improve your moods when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are wonderful for helping you fight depression. Just be sure that you do not toss the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, particularly the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to improve your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try consuming a couple of eggs to cheer up!

Put together some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and so on. This is possible because these foods are rich in magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that directs the brain how to feel at any given time. The more serotonin you have, the happier you will feel. Nuts, on top of improving your mood, can be a superb source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you want to fight depression. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight depression.

It’s not difficult to fight your bad mood when you eat grains. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all good for helping you feel better. These foods can help you feel full for longer also, which is a mood improver. Feeling starved can truly make you feel terrible! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You knew it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while simultaneously loosening up the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to become healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood too!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try some of these instead!
