Learn How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

A lot of us believe that comfort foods are not good for us and that we should keep away from them. Sometimes, if the comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this is very true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be very nutritious and good for you. There are a number of foods that basically can improve your moods when you eat them. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually great at fighting back depression. Just see to it that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. The yolk is the most essential part of the egg in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks especially, are loaded with B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to raise your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–function better. Consume an egg and cheer up!

Make a trail mixout of a variety of seeds and nuts. Your mood can be raised by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other types of nuts. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Not only that, nuts, particularly, are a terrific protein source.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you want to fight depression. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.

It’s easy to fight your bad mood when you consume grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly excellent for helping increase your happiness levels. They can help you feel full for longer too, which is a mood improver. It’s not hard to feel depressed when you feel famished! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest and process. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Your mood could actually be helped by green tea. You were sure it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is chock-full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while at the same time calming your body. You probably already knew it is not hard to be healthy when you drink green tea. Now you are aware that green tea helps you to lift your moods too!

So you see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are terrible for you just so to feel better! Try some of these hints instead.
