Foods That Make Your Mood Better

Most of us think that comfort foods are not good for us and that we should keep away from them. At times, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that really can improve your moods when you consume them. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional pick-me-up, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are terrific for helping you battle depression. Just see to it that you do not throw out the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, especially the yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to improve your mood. This is because they help in bettering the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that affect your mood. Eat an egg and feel better!

Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all good for improving your mood. This is because these nuts are rich in magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that tells your brain how you feel day in and day out. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Not only that, nuts, in particular, are a terrific protein source.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you are wanting to battle depression. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all high in omega-3 and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can earnestly elevate your mood.

It’s easy to overcome your bad mood when you eat grains. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are excellent at helping you be happier. These foods fill you up better and that can help you with your moods too. Feeling starved can be awful! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your glucose levels which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You just knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is found to be packed full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies show that this particular amino acid can basically stimulate brain waves. This helps better your mental acuity while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You likely already knew how easy it is to get healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood as well!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these tips instead.
