Turn to Food to Elevate Your Mood

Many of us have been taught to think that comfort foods are not good and must be avoided. Sometimes, if the comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this is very true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be completely nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. Several foods honestly do elevate your mood when you consume them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, you may be amazed to find out, are fantastic at battling depression. You need to make sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the yolk particularly, are stuffed full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to elevate your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that control your mood. Eat an egg and cheer up!

Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be improved by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is called the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more of it you have, the more pleasant you are going to feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a fantastic source of protein.

If you wish to defeat depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3s. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you fight your depression.

Grains can be excellent for fighting a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all great for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They can help you feel full for longer as well, helping you feel better. Feeling starved can actually make you feel terrible! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Your mood can truly be helped by green tea. You were just expecting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is loaded with a certain amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this particular amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This helps better your mental focus while calming the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you become healthier. And now you are aware that it can help you be happier also!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a few of these instead!
