Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood

Mostly, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and need to be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is very true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be extremely nourishing and good for you. There are several foods that, when you consume them, could improve your mood. When you are feeling a little down and need an emotional boost, try a couple of these.

Eggs, you may be amazed to find out, are wonderful at battling depression. Just see to it that you don’t get rid of the egg yolk. The yolk is the most important part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolks especially, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to boost your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Consume an egg and feel better!

Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all great for raising your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The more serotonin in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, specifically, are a great protein food source.

Cold water fish are excellent if you wish to feel better. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all high in omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can really help you overcome your depression.

Grains can be good for fighting a bad mood. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are terrific at helping you feel happier. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to make your mood better. It’s not difficult to feel low when you feel famished! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood glucose which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is truly excellent for your mood. You just knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is rich in a specific amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies show that this specific amino acid can basically stimulate brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while at the same calming the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you become healthier. Now you know that it helps you to lift your moods too!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these suggestions instead.
