Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood

Many of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are terrible and must be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is candy or another junk food, this is true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, can better your mood. If you seem to feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really great at fighting back depression. Just be sure that you do not throw out the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolks particularly, are loaded with B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to raise your mood. This is because they improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try eating an egg and cheer up!

Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be raised by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and so on. This is possible because these foods have a bunch of magnesium which promotes serotonin production. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Not only that but nuts, in particular, are a terrific source of protein.

Cold water fish are great if you want to feel happier. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you battle your depression.

Grains can be excellent for overcoming a terrible mood. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are great at helping you be happier. They help you feel full as well which can really help to improve your mood. Feeling hungry can be terrible! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your blood glucose which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is truly great for your mood. You were just expecting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can actually stimulate brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you become a lot healthier. Now you know that applies to your mood as well!

You can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are terrible for you to feel better! Try some of these instead!
