Foods That Make You Happy

For the most part, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and have to be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be extremely nourishing and good for you. There are some foods that, when you eat them, can boost your mood. If you seem to feel a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are fantastic for helping you fight depression. Just see to it that you don’t get rid of the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolks in particular, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to elevate your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–work better. Consume an egg and cheer up!

Make a trail mixout of a variety of seeds and nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all great for raising your mood. This is because these foods are high in magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that tells your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more serotonin you have, the happier you will feel. Not only that, nuts, particularly, are a great protein food source.

Cold water fish are great if you wish to feel better. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.

Grains can be good for overcoming a bad mood. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all excellent for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They help you feel full too which can really help to improve your mood. Feeling famished can actually make you feel awful! These grains can improve your mood as it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your glucose levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is actually good for your mood. You were simply expecting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies show that this specific amino acid can actually induce brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not hard to get healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that applies to your mood too!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these tips instead.
