How to Improve Your Mood with Food

In general, people have been trained to think that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and should be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this is very true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be very healthy and good for you. A number of foods really do boost your mood when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, you might be astonished to discover, are terrific at combating depression. Just see to it that you do not throw away the yolk. The yolk is the most crucial part of the egg in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to elevate your mood. This is because they increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat an egg and feel a lot happier!

Put together a trail mixfrom various seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all great for helping to boost your mood. This is possible because these foods are rich in magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Nuts, on top of raising your mood, can be a superb protein source.

Cold water fish are great if you would like to feel happier. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.

Some grains are really great for repelling bad moods. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all good for helping you feel happier. They help you feel full also which can really help to better your mood. Feeling starved can be terrible! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are not hard to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can actually stimulate brain waves. This helps raise your mental sharpness while calming the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you feel healthier. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood too!

So you see, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you wish to feel better! Go with these hints instead!
