How to Improve Your Mood with Food

In general, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and must be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. At times, comfort foods can be perfectly healthy and good for us to consume. There are a number of foods that actually can boost your moods when you consume them. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at dealing with depression. Just be sure that you do not toss the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks especially, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you elevate your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–function better. Try to eat an egg and feel a lot better!

Make a trail mixout of different seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all fantastic for helping to raise your mood. This is because these nuts are rich in magnesium, which helps to boost serotonin levels. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more serotonin you have, the better you are going to feel. Not just that but nuts, particularly, are a terrific protein source.

Cold water fish are great if you are wanting to be in a better mood. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you fight your depression.

Grains can be wonderful for fighting a terrible mood. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all great for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They can help you feel full for longer also, helping you feel better. Feeling starved can be awful! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest and process. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Green tea is truly excellent for your mood. You were just waiting to read that in this article, weren’t you? Green tea is high in a particular amino acid called L-theanine. Studies show that this particular amino acid can actually stimulate brain waves. This helps raise your mental acuity while relaxing the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you be healthier. And now you know it can help improve your mood as well!

So you see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are not good for you so you can feel better! Try some of these tips instead.
