Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood

In general, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and need to be avoided. Sometimes, if the comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is very true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that basically can boost your moods when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are great for helping you fight depression. Just see to it that you don’t get rid of the egg yolk. Every time you would like to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolk particularly, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you improve your mood. This is because these vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat an egg and cheer up!

Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all great for helping to raise your mood. This is because these nuts are high in magnesium, which helps to boost serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The more of it you have, the better you are going to feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a great protein source.

Cold water fish are great if you would like to be in a better mood. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all chock-full of omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can seriously boost your mood.

Some grains are really excellent for fighting off bad moods. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are great at helping you feel better. They fill you up better and that can help improve your moods also. It’s easy to feel low when you are starving! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood glucose which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You just knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid actually stimulates brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while at the same relaxing the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to become healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that applies to your mood as well!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Go with these hints instead!
