Use Food to Elevate Your Mood

Many of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are terrible and must be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. At times, comfort foods can be utterly healthy and good for us to eat. Several foods honestly do elevate your mood when you consume them. When you are feeling a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, try a few of these.

Eggs, you might be astonished to find out, are wonderful at fighting depression. You need to make sure, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most vital part of the egg. Eggs, especially the egg yolks, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to improve your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–function better. Consume an egg and feel a lot better!

Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all great for raising your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that tells your brain how you feel at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a fantastic protein source.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you want to battle depression. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you overcome depression.

Some grains are actually wonderful for repelling bad moods. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all good for helping you feel better. These foods can help you feel full for longer also, helping you feel better. Feeling hungry can actually make you feel terrible! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. You digest these grains quicker than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.

Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You just knew it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has been found to be packed full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid essentially stimulates brain waves. This helps raise your mental acuity while relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you become a lot healthier. Now you are well aware that it helps you to raise your moods as well!

See, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try several of these instead!
