Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood

For the most part, people have been conditioned to think that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and need to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this is true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that basically can raise your moods when you eat them. If you are feeling a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, you may be surprised to find out, are wonderful at battling depression. Just make sure that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. When you wish to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most vital part of the egg. Eggs, specifically the egg yolks, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can be terrific for elevating your mood. This is because they increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Try to eat an egg and feel a lot better!

Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all great for helping to raise your mood. This is possible as these foods have a bunch of magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more of it in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not just that, nuts, particularly, are a terrific protein food source.

If you would like to defeat depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. These are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can seriously elevate your mood.

Grains can be great for driving away a terrible mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly great for helping increase your happiness levels. These grains fill you up better and that can help improve your moods as well. It’s not hard to feel a little bit off when you are starving! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is really good for your mood. You were sure it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has been found to be chock-full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid actually induces brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while simultaneously loosening up the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you become a lot healthier. And now you are aware that green tea can help raise your mood also!

As you can see, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you wish to feel better! Try some of these tips instead.
