Use Food to Elevate Your Mood

Many of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are not good and are to be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this holds true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be completely nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. Some foods really do improve your mood when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and need an emotional boost, test out a few of these.

Eggs, you may be surprised to find out, are fantastic at battling depression. Just make sure that you don’t get rid of the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the egg yolk especially, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to improve your mood. This is because they improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Try to eat an egg and feel a lot happier!

Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all great for helping to elevate your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that directs your brain how you feel all the time. The higher your serotonin levels, the better you will feel. Not just that but nuts, specifically, are a fantastic protein food source.

If you would like to defeat depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all high in omega-3 fats and DHA. These are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.

It’s easy to overcome your bad mood when you eat grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly wonderful for helping raise your happiness levels. These grains can help you feel full for longer as well, helping you feel better. Feeling famished can be a real downer! These grains can elevate your mood since it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Green tea is really great for your mood. You were just waiting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while simultaneously calming your body. You already knew that green tea helps you feel better. Now you know that applies to your mood as well!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these suggestions instead.
