Learn How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

A lot of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are bad and to be avoided. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. There are a number of foods that basically can improve your moods when you consume them. When you feel a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are wonderful for helping you fight depression. You should make sure, though, that what you make includes the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolks particularly, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you boost your mood. This is because these vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat an egg and be happy!

Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all great for helping to raise your mood. This is possible since these foods are rich in magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that directs your brain how you feel at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the better you will feel. Not only that but nuts, in particular, are a fantastic protein food source.

If you would like to overcome depression, try eating some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all chock-full of omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight depression.

It’s not hard to overcome your bad mood when you eat grains. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all wonderful for helping you be in a happier state of mind. These grains can help you feel full for longer as well, which can help your mood too. It’s not difficult to feel depressed when you are starving! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not hard for your stomach to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is truly good for your mood. You just knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while simultaneously loosening up the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you be a lot healthier. And now you know it can help improve your mood too!

See, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try some of these hints instead.
