Turn to Food to Boost Your Mood

A lot of us have been trained to think that comfort foods are terrible and must be avoided. Sometimes, if the comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this is true. At times, comfort foods can be perfectly nourishing and good for us to consume. Some foods really do boost your mood when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, you may be surprised to learn, are terrific at combating depression. You need to make sure, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk especially, are stuffed full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to improve your mood. This is because they help in bettering the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that control your mood. Eat an egg and feel a lot better!

Put together a trail mixfrom different seeds and nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all wonderful for raising your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that directs your brain how you feel all the time. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you will feel. Not just that, nuts, in particular, are a great protein food source.

If you wish to fight depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all full of omega-3s and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight depression.

Some grains are actually wonderful for driving away bad moods. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really excellent for helping increase your happiness levels. These foods can help you feel full for longer also, helping you feel better. Feeling starved can be awful! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your glucose levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is truly great for your mood. You knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid actually stimulates brain waves. This helps improve your mental acuity while relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you feel healthier. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood as well!

So you see, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you wish to feel better! Try some of these instead!
