How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

Most of us believe that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we should stay away from them. Often, if the comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that, when you consume them, can better your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are wonderful for helping you combat depression. Just see to it that you don’t toss out the yolk. The yolk is the most crucial part of the egg in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the egg yolks particularly, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try consuming a couple of eggs to feel better!

Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all terrific for helping to boost your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more of this chemical in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Nuts, in addition to raising your mood, can be a super protein source.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you wish to fight depression. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all loaded with omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you overcome depression.

Some grains are actually excellent for driving away bad moods. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all good for helping you feel happier. They can help you feel full for longer also, helping you feel better. It’s easy to feel a little bit off when you feel hungry! These grains can improve your mood as it’s easy for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your blood sugar which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is really good for your mood. You just knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is high in a particular amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies prove that this specific amino acid can basically induce brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while simultaneously calming the rest of your body. You knew green tea could help you become healthier. Now you know that applies to your mood as well!

So you see, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try some of these instead!
